Who can apply: Rising 12th graders who are 17+ by June 1, 2026 and have completed CIT I, CIT II, or have similar experience.

As a Junior Counselor (JC), you’ll work alongside our amazing camp staff—helping with boating, crafts, games, cookouts, and more! You’ll also get behind-the-scenes experience with planning and organizing camp programs.
You’ll be matched with a dedicated mentor to support you, and will have tons of chances to learn, grow, and lead, but will not yet supervise campers on your own. You’ll get to enjoy a few perks reserved for camp staff, like daily 2-hours breaks, cell phone use during time off, access to the kitchenette and staff showers, and a free staff t-shirt. Room and board at camp are free throughout your internship.

All applicants who are accepted into the Junior Counselor Program, contingent on the submission of this application and an interview by the camp director, will be required to attend a mandatory training course, date TBD. Cameras must be ON, and Junior Counselors must have a working microphone so they can communicate with their trainer. An optional Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course will be offered to all JC interns. This training will take place at the beginning of the summer, exact dates and details will be given to those who are accepted into the program.
  • Switching or Canceling Sessions

If you have signed up for a session you will not be able to attend you must notify the respective Camp Director no later than 1 week in advance. If you would like to add a session you must notify the respective Camp Director, no later than 1 week before the start of that session.
  • Evaluations

All Junior Counselors will be evaluated at the end of each session by their mentor or a member of the leadership staff. These evaluations are created for the betterment of our staff and are to be seen as means of improvement. In a camp environment constructive criticism is necessary and Junior Counselors must be prepared to listen, adapt, and learn throughout their tenure.
  • Transportation

Junior Counselors must let the camp director know one week in advance if they plan to stay on camp between sessions. If a JC chooses to stay on camp between sessions, they must have a parent/guardian sign a form that will be provided to them upon request. In short, this form states that staff is not responsible for the welfare of their child during off time. JC's can ride the bus to and from Bear Creek Aquatic Camp if space is available. There is no bus for Camp Pennyroyal JC's are also welcome to drive their personal vehicles to camp but must park them at the front entrance and cannot use them during camp sessions.
  • Termination

If a JC’s attitude or actions are deemed unacceptable, they will be given a verbal warning. If for a second time a JC’s attitude or actions are deemed unacceptable, they will be given a written warning. If this occurs a third time they will be dismissed from the program. If this happens in the middle of a session, depending on the severity, they may be asked to find their own transportation home from camp.
  • I have read the DO’S and DON’TS and overview of the Junior Counselor Program. I understand that if I am accepted to the Junior Counselor Program, I will perform the duties expected to the best of my ability. If my work performance or behavior is deemed unacceptable, I understand that my participation in the program can be terminated at any time and will have adequate transportation to return from camp if the situation warrants.
